Elevators are classified into three basic types based on their functioning priciple

  1. Hydraulic Elevators: They are mostly utilized in low-rise buildings (up to six floors) controlled and supported by one or two hydraulic pistons below the base of the cabin.

  2. Traction Elevators: Traction elevators are divided into two categories gearless and geared, they work on the basic traction principle;using ropes or high-tensile wires.

  3. Machine Roomless: They don't need a machine room to operate the lift since they use more compact hoisting sheaves, and the machine is positioned immediately in the elevator hoistway. This type of elevators work the same as traction elevators but do not have a separate machine room.
